You've invested in good skincare. But if you're applying it in the wrong order, you might not be getting the results you paid for. Layering matters — and the K-beauty approach has it down to a science.
The Golden Rule: Thinnest to Thickest
Skincare should always be applied from the lightest, most watery consistency to the heaviest. This ensures each product can penetrate the skin properly rather than sitting on top of a barrier created by a thicker product.
The Correct Order
Morning Routine:
- Cleanser — start with a clean canvas. A gentle, low-pH foam cleanser is ideal for morning use
- Toner — rebalances the skin's pH after cleansing and preps it to absorb what comes next
- Essence — a lightweight, hydrating step unique to K-beauty that boosts absorption of subsequent products
- Serum — your targeted treatment. Apply your most active product here (vitamin C in the morning for brightening and antioxidant protection)
- Eye cream — gently pat around the orbital bone, never drag
- Moisturiser — locks in all the layers beneath it
- SPF — always the final step in the morning. No exceptions
Evening Routine:
- Oil cleanser — breaks down SPF, makeup, and pollution
- Foam cleanser — removes any remaining residue
- Exfoliating toner (2–3x per week) — AHA/BHA to resurface and brighten
- Toner — hydrate and prep
- Essence
- Serum — swap to retinol or a repair serum at night when skin is in recovery mode
- Eye cream
- Moisturiser — go slightly richer at night to support overnight repair
- Facial oil (optional) — seals everything in and adds an extra layer of nourishment
Common Layering Mistakes
- Applying SPF before moisturiser — SPF should always be last in your morning routine
- Using retinol and vitamin C together — these can irritate when combined. Use vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night
- Skipping the wait time — give each layer 30–60 seconds to absorb before applying the next
- Over-layering — more products doesn't always mean better results. Focus on a few well-chosen products applied correctly
A Note on Actives
If you're using multiple active ingredients (retinol, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C, niacinamide), introduce them one at a time and give your skin 2 weeks to adjust before adding the next. This makes it easier to identify what's working — and what isn't.
Layering correctly won't just improve your results — it'll make your products last longer too.
