SPF Every Day: Why Sunscreen Is the Most Important Step in Your Skincare Routine

Ask any dermatologist, aesthetician, or K-beauty devotee what the single most important skincare product is, and the answer is always the same: sunscreen.

Not a vitamin C serum. Not retinol. Sunscreen.

Why SPF Is Non-Negotiable

UV radiation is the leading cause of premature skin ageing — responsible for up to 80% of visible signs of ageing including fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and loss of elasticity. It also causes DNA damage that accumulates over time, regardless of whether you burn.

And here's the part most people miss: UV damage happens every day, not just at the beach. It happens through windows. On cloudy days. During your morning commute. If your skin is exposed to daylight, it's being exposed to UV.

UVA vs UVB: What's the Difference?

  • UVB rays cause sunburn — they're the ones most people think of when they think "sun damage"
  • UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are responsible for ageing and long-term DNA damage. They pass through glass and are present year-round, even in winter

A broad-spectrum SPF protects against both. Anything less isn't doing the full job.

Why K-Beauty Sunscreens Are Different

Korean sunscreens have a well-earned reputation for being the best in the world — and it's not just hype. Korean cosmetic regulations require rigorous testing, and the formulations are genuinely ahead of what's available in many Western markets.

K-beauty SPFs are typically:

  • Lightweight and non-greasy — no white cast, no heavy residue
  • Skin-toned or transparent — wearable under makeup or alone
  • Hydrating — many double as a final moisturising step
  • High protection — SPF50+ with PA++++ UVA rating is standard

How Much to Apply

The most common SPF mistake is under-application. To get the protection stated on the label, you need approximately ¼ teaspoon (1.25ml) for the face alone. Most people apply a fraction of this.

A good rule of thumb: if you can't tell you're wearing it, you're probably not wearing enough.

Reapplication

SPF degrades with UV exposure, sweat, and touch. For full protection, reapply every 2 hours when outdoors. A cushion SPF or SPF setting spray makes this easy without disturbing your makeup.

The Bottom Line

Every serum, every treatment, every carefully chosen active ingredient works better — and lasts longer — when your skin is protected from UV damage. SPF isn't the final step in your routine. It's the step that makes every other step worth it.

Wear it every day. No exceptions.
